Athletic Physical Night 2023-2024
May the 4th Be With You!
From a Social Studies Galaxy far, far away at CPMS Mr. Beck could be overheard telling his students; "You know, sometimes I amaze even myself." Mr. Phipps had this quick remark; don’t everybody thank me at once." Mr. Parkhurst, on the other hand, had some great advice for his students; “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
Mr. Akers reassured his students; "I won’t fail you. I’m not afraid” and Mrs. Lyons summed up the day with this comment; “I’d just as soon kiss a Wookiee.”

Cash Prize Presented to GCES Teacher Angela Fowler!
At Red Carpet Gala, Lowell and Mike Milken Present Indiana 2022 Milken Educator Award Recipient with $25,000 Cash Prize
Santa Monica, Calif., (May 2, 2023) — The Milken Family Foundation says: Roll out the red carpet for America’s outstanding educators! Lowell Milken – founder of the Milken Educator Awards and chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation – and Mike Milken – co-founder and president of the Milken Family Foundation – presented Indiana 2022 Milken Educator Award recipient Angela Fowler with her $25,000 cash prize at a national forum held at UCLA April 20-21. The gala celebration culminated a powerful professional development experience for Milken Educators to “Celebrate, Elevate and Activate” K-12 teaching.
“From the original cadre of 12 outstanding educators in California, the Milken Educator Network has grown to a nationwide force of more than 2,900 educators. Tonight, that network expands still further, with the induction of 35 professionals whose talent and dedication are helping to ensure a brighter future for thousands of young Americans – indeed, for our very nation itself,” stated Lowell Milken. “We shine a spotlight on these men and women so that when they return to their schools, they will know that their work is not only noticed but treasured. We hope that they will inspire many other talented young people to become exceptional teachers, principals and specialists, keeping the fire of learning alive in the hearts and minds of young people for decades to come.”
Helping Hands!
A class of third grade students from nearby Franklin Community Schools are reaching out to Whiteland students who were impacted by the recent tornado, thanks to the long-time professional relationship of their two teachers. Brandi Speight, from Pleasant Crossing Elementary, has known Needham Elementary teacher Rebecca McCain for more than 20 years. This friendship has led to a story of compassion as the Needham third graders wanted to do something to help Whiteland students. “Mrs. McCain has always had a heart of gold”, says Mrs. Speight. “She contacted me right after the tornado wanting some practical way to help the kids who were affected by this tragedy”.
Mrs. Speight had the opportunity to visit McCain’s class of third graders at Needham, last week. She says McCain’s caring spirit has definitely rubbed off onto her students. After lots of hugs Mrs. Speight came back to Whiteland Elementary with dozens of cards, games and books donated by the students to our Whiteland students who have lost a lot due to the tornado. “The thought behind their donations was that these things could take their mind off of the temporary housing they might still be in and the rebuilding they are doing and that they may get some joy in getting "lost" in a story or game with their family”.
Mrs. Speight says if there was a way to “bottle up” the love from the Needham students and pass it on to each Whiteland student she would make it happen. “I think we all know that academic lessons students can learn from us are necessary and important. That is our goal as educators! But the life lessons that our students can learn in addition to that such as compassion and caring for others are the priceless lessons that they'll need to be the kind of humans we all want to see them become to make this world a better place”, concluded Mrs. Speight.
Happy National School Principal's Day 2023!

Check out the calendar attached for 31 ways to make the world around you work for your mental health.
Young Entrepreneurs!
WCHS economics students are testing out the business world this week during their annual Econ Mall event. As part of their class students come up with a business idea, marketing strategy and a price for their product or service. The big test is trying to sell those goods and services to other students.
Many stuck with selling familiar products like pop and pizza while others decided to really test the market by selling things like bamboo plants and homemade t-shirts. Students learn a lot through the exercise such as learning what it takes to make a profit or break even. Others unfortunately learn what a business "loss" can look like.
Sweet Book Fair!
Ray Crowe Elementary held a family event, Friday morning, which included a book fair and donut truck. It proved to be a popular and sweet event with long lines and lots of interest in the latest children's books.

Savoring Success!
Thursday, we celebrated, with a luncheon, 55 seniors who are on track to earn the Indiana College Core (ICC). We are very proud of their accomplishments!
ICC is a "block" of 30 general education credits of college-level coursework. They earn these credits through WCHS dual credit classes and qualifying AP scores. The ICC is guaranteed to transfer between Indiana public colleges and universities.
To earn the ICC, students must take at least three credit hours in six competency areas, as well as an additional 12 “elective” credit hours from the same competencies. Once students earn these credits, they will have fulfilled the core requirements equivalent to their first year of college starting college as Sophomores, saving time and money!

Student Consultants!
In the wake of the recent Tornado that tore a destructive path through the Town of Whiteland, a class of WCHS students have signed on to become consultants, so to speak, as the Town looks for ways to improve its public safety plan.
Government teacher, Justin Schwenk, is leading his students through this real-life assignment to look for solutions and policies that could actually help improve how the town responds to disasters in the future. “Students will research, gather data, identify policy solutions, create an action plan and ultimately present their recommendations to Whiteland and Johnson County safety officials”, says Mr. Schwenk.
Students are working in teams of four with each concentrating on specific areas. Local government officials including Carmen Young, from the Town of Whiteland, spoke to the students this week about areas where they can provide input.
While it might be relatively easy to define problems, coming up with solutions and how to implement them as well as gaining public input will be more challenging for these government students during their last month of school. The project is to be completed by May 25th.
They must do an oral presentation supplemented by a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation. All materials that will be provided to Town and County officials.
