OSHA Cards Presented! Three WCHS students, Charles McMichael, Jackson Mullins, and Mackenzie Bowen, received their OSHA cards on Wednesday, making them eligible to work on a construction site. The cards were presented to them by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Cassandra Shipp. These students are part of an Innovative-Groundbreaking Program announced earlier this year between Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation and The Howard Companies construction firm. The Howard Companies donated $25,000 to the high school to launch the program. This program is a new civil construction pathway program that aims to equip Whiteland Community High School students with the skills and credentials necessary to be employable and ready to join the workforce or continue their certifications upon graduation. This partnership allows students to earn college credit and certification while in high school, enabling them to start a career immediately after graduation. https://howardcompanies.com/ https://howardcompanies.com/

Commended Students! We are proud to announce that WCHS Seniors, Jaiden Buskirk, Alexander Smith, and Sabiha Thind have been recognized as Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. This honor is awarded to about 34,000 students across the nation who have shown exceptional academic promise through their outstanding performance on the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. While they will not proceed to the next stage of the competition for National Merit Scholarships, being named Commended Students places them among the top 50,000 students in the country, highlighting their outstanding potential and accomplishments. Sabiha aspires to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. She currently holds the positions of president of the student council and vice president of NHS and Best Buddies. Jaiden serves as a drum major in the band and is a skilled saxophonist. He plans to pursue a degree in mathematics. Alex has set his sights on attending Purdue University to study engineering and mathematics. He is actively involved in NHS, the band, and is a member of the math and science academic team. We extend our congratulations to Jaiden, Alexander, and Sabiha on this outstanding achievement!

Making The Pitch Perfect! The construction of the Whiteland Community High School Soccer Complex redevelopment project for the Clark-Pleasant School Corporation is progressing well. The complex will include three separate buildings: a 4,500-square-foot main complex building with concessions, restrooms, locker rooms, a conference room, and trainer and coach offices; a 130-square-foot ticket booth with a new sign and gated entrance to the complex; and a new press box with three floors of 550 square feet each as well as a viewing platform on top. Currently, our focus is on the main complex building. We have completed building the foundation walls for this structure and are now preparing to lay the slab, followed by block walls. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.

Civics Education and Democracy in Action! On Tuesday, the WCHS Media Center was turned into a Voter Registration Day site to celebrate National Voter Registration Day. During each period, Government & Econ Classes visited the media center to go through educational stations where they learned about voting and their rights and had the opportunity to register or pledge to register. All staff members were welcomed and encouraged to drop in and check out the site. Additionally, those who needed to register, check their registration status, or learn more about voting had the chance to do so. A big thank you to Ms. Holton for her collaboration and preparation. Without her, this event wouldn't have been as awesome as it was. We also extend our gratitude to the Johnson County Clerk's Office for loaning us a voting machine and supporting our efforts.

CPCSC STAFF SPOTLIGHT Geneva Nino, Crystal Hickey & Jill McIntire, The Transportation Instructors! Geneva Nino, Crystal Hickey, and Jill McIntire are the transportation trio that trains Clark-Pleasant Community School Corporation bus drivers. They bring 60 years of school bus driving experience and 15 years of CDL driver training. Geneva, a mother of three, often surprises people when she tells them she’s a school bus driver. She acknowledges that it’s not an easy job, but she loves it. Having worked as an instructor for five years, she finds the best part of the job is getting to know the drivers one-on-one. She says, “Driving candidates all have different driving-training styles, so we adjust to best meet their needs.” Crystal has been an instructor for the past 7 years. She is also a mother of four. She enjoys being on her kids' schedule the most. An interesting fact about her is that she once took a month-long trip to Australia. Jill is the newest instructor with three years of experience, but she’s been a driver for nearly two decades. When asked which role she likes better, she expressed, “Driving is my most important duty.” Jill, who is married with 2 children and one grandchild, also describes herself as a young grandma. No one gets to drive a Clark-Pleasant school bus without the approval of Geneva, Crystal, and Jill. Training includes a lot of bus walkarounds (commonly referred to as pre-trips and many hours behind the wheel with an instructor to gain the necessary experience. Driver candidates are expected to train for several hours to prepare for their skills test. The typical timeline is approximately 4-6 weeks from start to finish. These ladies emphasize that safety is first and foremost. Additionally, passing a driving skills test is not easy. The process is an external assessment governed by the DOT. Crystal mentions, “There are also some rewarding moments. I had a student who got in trouble on my bus in elementary school, and he came back in high school and apologized.” Michael Akers, Director of Transportation, says that, “Geneva, Jill, and Crystal, are the lifeblood behind our ability to successfully staff our department. All three work together to improve teaching and learning for new staff aspiring to be CDL drivers. We are extremely fortunate to have them on our team.” A big thank you to the Transportation Instructors for all you do and for being our Staff Spotlight honorees!"
